We are pleased to announce that Prof. Dr. Thomas Ganslandt has accepted the call as W3 Professor for Medical Data Science at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. His appointment by university president Prof. Dr. Hornegger takes place on 12.11.2021.
With this step, Thomas Ganslandt returns to Erlangen from the Medical Faculty Mannheim of the Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg, where he was the Acting Director of the Heinrich-Lanz-Center for Digital Health at Mannheim University Medicine and headed the Department of Biomedical Informatics. In his former successful time in Erlangen, he already led the Department for Research and Management Infrastructure at the Erlangen University Hospital. With his team he closely cooperated with the Erlangen Chair of Medical Informatics in numerous international research projects. We are therefore all the more excited to resume our joint work.
Research areas of the professorship will focus on medical data interoperability, intelligent procedures for data integration and harmonization, and data analytics. The professorship has its secondary affiliation in the FAU Technical Faculty within the newly created Department Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering (AIBE) with the goal of enabling data-driven projects combining clinical care and artificial intelligence. Furthermore, he will continue his successful work in the MIRACUM consortium, now as new Co-PI from the Erlangen site. In addition, at Erlangen University Hospital, Professor Ganslandt will assume the position of Chief Medical Information Officer, where he will be driving strategic aspects of aligning clinical care, research and IT infrastructure.
Prof. Dr. Thomas Ganslandt is a medical doctor. After studying human medicine, he worked in general surgery and medical informatics at University Hospital Münster from 1998-2003 and at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and University Hospital Erlangen from 2003-2018. In 2017, Thomas Ganslandt received his habilitation at the Medical Faculty of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. He was appointed to the professorship for Medical Informatics at the Medical Faculty Mannheim (Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg) on 01.03.2018. Since 2017 he is a speaker of the Interoperability Working Group of the German Medical Informatics Initiative and since 2020 a member of its National Steering Board. Since 2018 he is a Board member of the Technology & Method Platform for Networked Medical Research (TMF e.V.).
